Xperias were one of the shittiest phones from previously big companies. They constantly broke and customers never bought them, their market share is abysmal in 2024.

    iPhones on the other hand…

I know this is in Memes and obvious bait, but you’re comparing a phone with a $1300 launch price to a phone that’s launching at $800. If you compared it to the $1000 16 Pro your bait wouldn’t be as good.

That’s only half the story, too.

The phone with the $1300 launch price is also obsolete, it hasn’t gotten a major Android version update since 13, released in 2022. The phone itself was released in 2021.

Apple also discontinued support for some older phones with their 2022 OS release. Namely, they dropped anything older than the iPhone 8, released in 2017. So the oldest Sony I to get a major OS version update in 2022 was made in 2021, the oldest iPhone was made in 2017.

By the way, this comes from someone who used to love Sony and still does. My Arc S was awesome, it was even designed in such a way that if you dropped it, nothing would happen generally (okay, the battery would fall out if you dropped from high enough). But they’ve really dropped the ball on software support.

This is dumb because it’s not comparing the 16 Pro model. The 16 is the budget model. The pro model has many of these features like the 120Hz display, but I guess you need to omit things to get people outraged and upvote your silly meme.

You lost me at the “who uses wired headphones anymore” part. I use them all the time. Bluetooth is stupid. It’s flaky. It’s like choosing to use a CD player that skips when you’ve got an mp3 player that can’t. It has its uses, but for headphones? Nah. I’m not sold.

Bluetooth is only flaky when you’re on an Android, though. I put my AirPods in and they just work. Sorry 🤷‍♂️

I usually don’t comment on these kind of things but the clear lack of understanding is astounding. Shit is different for every phone and manufacture.

Yes I would totally love expandable storage but you know what, there have been android phones I used that didn’t have expandable storage. (Not trying to do “what about” but a simple example showing there are tons of phones that have the same problem)

Xperia 1 III was $1300 when it launched. Not a huge difference but based on inflation that would be $1500 now instead of $999.

Now for the shit almost no one cares about that the iPhone has and have had for years that Xperia 1 III didn’t. (And flame bonus, that some android phones still don’t!!!) All shitty jokes aside, I am sure there are plenty of Android phones that have this, just showing the stupidity in the argument.

    • 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio
    • 1,000 nits max brightness (typical); 1,600 nits peak brightness (HDR); 2,000 nits peak brightness (outdoor); 1 nit minimum brightness
    • 2x optical zoom in
    • 5‑core GPU
    • 16‑core Neural Engine
    • Dolby Vision Video Recording
    • Emergency SOS via Satellite

I don’t care about this list either its just random stats I found on the iPhone page that didn’t show up in the Xperia page. iPhone Stats - https://www.apple.com/uk/iphone-16/specs/ Xperia Stats - https://www.sony.com/electronics/support/mobile-phones-tablets-mobile-phones/xperia-1-iii/specifications

I just love that every year the haters gonna crawl out and post their spec sheet cope.
Like yeah you got 120hz refresh watching a 30fps video, draining nearly 4x the power if not for adaptive framerate - so 120hz for nothing. Same with all high res audio and USB3. Fact is for 99.9% of everyday users those things aren’t beneficial and are solely existent because the android market is more competitive and devices have to stand out somehow. Apple has their UX and iOS as a unique selling point and with their enhanced privacy and long software support that’s the premium you pay not just for the hardware but mostly software (ignoring the „we are a premium brand tax“)

Most high refresh rate screens on a phone will adjust dynamically to the use-case as to not waste battery.

Apple’s big selling point is the Apple ecosystem and their familiar UI to the phone market, If you’re an incumbent player trying to take market share, it only makes sense that you copy their UI.

That being said, use whatever works for you.

Okay but the Apple Watch monitors for sleep apnea. If they arent introducing new features what is the point in upgrading?

Apple are underperforming. Why is it a useless feature until Apple introduce it, these guys come out every year on stage talking about new colours.

Except that users very much want those. They may not no the features by name but they will notice they are missing. Also iOS is totally locked down and Apple exclusive. It might be fine if iphones were a cheap brand but they aren’t

iPhone Pro offers the fancy stuff. And is STILL cheaper than the Xperia featured here, especially when adjusted for inflation. And as I understand it that Xperia isn’t getting OS updates anymore, and it came out in 2021. Whereas iPhones from 2018 will get updated to iOS 18 this fall.

I’m not trying to say iPhone is “better” here. I’m saying people want different things from their devices and so people should get the device that meets their specific wants. It’s okay for different options to exist.

In my experience people by Apple products because of the logo not anything else. Its not like they are comparing phones across brands. I would have more respect if they compared phones across Samsung, Sony, Motorola and whoever else.

In my experience people by Apple products because of the logo not anything else. Its not like they are comparing phones across brands.

In my experience, most people don’t care that much about specs. They stick with the ecosystem they’re already using, whether that’s Apple or Google or (subset) Samsung, etc.

I, a fellow nerd, do care about specs. And I do compare phones. I used Android phones exclusively for a long time. When my favorite phone I’ve ever owned—the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren Edition—bricked, I bit the bullet and purchased an iPhone because at the time no Android options wowed me at a price point I was comfortable with, and because Apple has shitty policies regarding iMessage and I wanted to make life easier for my family and my wife’s family.

I have been pleasantly surprised. It had been years since I had the time or desire to root a phone, so I didn’t care about any of that. After a couple weeks getting used to a new OS, other than a few minor annoyances like inferior gestures and notifications the experiences are largely similar. As a spec junkie I of course went with the Pro, and have been very much impressed with the device.

I still keep an eye on the Android market, but nothing has appeared that is enough to shift me out of an ecosystem again. I maintain my photo library in Google in case I decide to switch again, but honestly I’ve been delighted by my experience on the dark side and don’t see myself going back over any time soon.

I would have more respect if they compared phones across Samsung, Sony, Motorola and whoever else.

My point is, again, let people do what they want device-wise. I don’t see why you feel like you need to have (or lack) respect for someone based on what smartphone they decide to use or what reasons they have for making their choice.

After all, I suspect you don’t include iPhones in your comparisons when you’re phone shopping, at least not realistically. And you have legitimate reasons for not doing so! Closed ecosystem being an important one, based on your previous comment. But your reasons aren’t going to Be the same as someone else’s. I used to care a lot about unlocking bootloaders and using custom ROMs but at a certain point in my life I stopped caring. That issue no longer mattered to me. But I can absolutely understand that it matters for you.

Edit: added a word I missed

I was just comparing the iPhone 16 to my Pixel 7 Pro last night. Apple finally has on-device closed captioning, and I’m tired of Google bugging me to use its AI assistant every time I use the regular assistant. The AI assistant can’t even do things the regular assistant can do, and it’s slower. Also, my phone has picked up some serious glitches over the last 6 months, and the USB connection has always been iffy. Anyways, people do in fact compare spec sheets when looking at iPhones.

Haha I’m currently writing from Xperia 1 iii and that thing sucks battery quite quickly due to it having snapdragon 888 and 4k screen

I honestly need neither of that and would be ok with 1080p screen and 865 cpu.

It is straight up a cult. I’ve tried explaining to people that Apple isn’t the best in many areas and it just goes over peoples heads. I also find it funny that Apple fans like to brag about new Apple features that are either meaningless or something that has been the standard for a decade.

Wouldn’t compare an iPhone with an actual usable smartphone. Even with better specs it would be borderline unusable. Well at least if you want to do anything else than calling and posting Instagram stories.

God this platform is insufferable. Lemmy is always “Linux is god, windows is satan; iPhone bad, android good” on every post and it’s unbelievably cringe. I can see why this platform still has a tiny amount of users. The elitism is as bad as Reddit vs iFunny/Imgur/whatever a decade ago.
