Repost bots have turned sorting by new in this community into something worse than useless.

  • At Lemmy’s current scale, sorting subscribed communities by new is still one of the best ways to interact with the site. But the repost bots in this one community are generating a post volume which is on par with the entire lemmyverse excluding other “frontpage” style subs like tech/gaming, which means if you sort by new everything else is drowned out by this one community.
  • The post volume here has now has completely swamped the comment volume, and most posts have no discussion at all.
  • The world news bot is also a mod, so it feels dangerous to block them and potentially miss important mod communications.
  • The botit bot is reposting the same links in multiple news subs.

These repost bots aren’t jumpstarting the community, they’re smothering it.

I really agree. I’ve been blocking them as I find them. I think one bot reposting links to multiple communities is not a good idea. Im already seeing a lot of redundant posts. This is the kind of thing that could smother Lemmy before it really gets off the ground.

u/WorldNews is not a bot, but a dedicated news enthusiast who is doing an excellent job fulfilling the purpose of this community: sharing World News. It’s worth noting that if we hadn’t created a Mega thread specifically for the Russia-Ukraine war news today, you would have seen a higher volume of news content on your frontpage. We implemented this measure to prevent the frontpage from being overwhelmed by a single topic and to maintain a more diverse range of news. In fact, we have blocked bots today that were agendaposting news, aiming to reduce the volume of repetitive content.

It is important to acknowledge that Lemmy is still in its early stages, resulting in limited activity and content generation. However, this is not the fault of c/world. Given the substantial volume of news links posted throughout the day, we suggest that if you prefer not to see the content shared by the moderators here, you have the option to block them individually or collectively.

I want it to stop. Please, make it stop. Bots with (so far) 350+ posts and ~30 comments. No engagement, and it’s all just from /r/. If we want to see /r/, we can go there.
