Short version is there was a whole blow up on social media of women saying they’d rather encounter a random bear in the woods than a random man in the woods given a choice. This has spawned a lot of memes in a short time.
If you don’t see the inherent sexism of it, just try picking a different group than “men” - if I asked if you’d rather encounter a random bear or a random black person in the woods and a group of WASPs were choosing the bear, you’d see the racism in that right? This is the same thing, just with an acceptable target.
Personally, I think that’s a grand example of risk assessment by feelings over actual risk, but that’s just me. It’s basically the reverse of the Pence Rule, except that people can see the inherent sexism of the Pence Rule while any man pointing it out in this case is presumed to be “part of the problem.”
And then tons of guys decided that women talking about their fears of being alone in the woods with a strange man was an attack on men and now are calling the entire discussion misandrist.
There is a long rich tradition of women discussing the effects of sexism only to have it be dismissed as sexism by men. Similar to critical race theory, white people being upset about the discussion of racism.
I suppose it’s similar to the discussion older and more successful men have about avoiding “gold diggers”, “bear traps”, and “black widows”. Not all women are after a man’s money, but those that are will actively seek out such men, so you’ll never be safe. One wrong move and you’re suddenly working overtime the rest of your life to pay child support for a child conceived without your consent. Whereas, a bear would only run into us by chance, and would be more likely to leave us alone if we dropped our food and calmly walked away.
Someone was asking about whether people would rather see a person or a bear in the woods. Bears are probably harmless but if not they’re deadly. People are probably annoying, but that’s the worst reasonable case. It was low odds high cost v high odds low cost.
Then some people used it to do a sexism.
Then some other people went “nuh uh” and did a counter sexism.
Current status is opposing directions of sexism in an arms race. Currently it seems the boys are worse than the girls, but girls have patience so we’ll see.
i’m out of the loop on this one, is this a reference to something? Or just an “original” take on what it means to be a woman?

There was a tiktok viral video question. “Would you rather be in the woods with a strange bear or a strange man”. A lot of women picked the bear.
