I don’t know why the question was asked in the city. Go out to the forest women and ask them.

In general, people and bears don’t want to hassle each other, doubly so for those in the woods. If you encounter either, you’re probably going to be fine. However, bears won’t stalk you, pretend to be friendly to gain your trust with the intention of harming you. Men won’t go into a blind rage because hibernation season is around the corner and you’re standing between them and a delicious tuna sandwich. Honestly if I’m alone in the woods I’d rather encounter an animal than a person because I was in the woods to be alone.

If you are in the woods and encounter a man or mountain lion

    • make yourself look as big as possible
    • maintain eye contact
    • demonstrate you are a threat
    • don’t trust his lies

    If you encounter a bear

    • avoid getting between a mother and her cubs
    • take extra precautions to bearproof your food at your campsite
    • back away slowly while facing the bear (without maintaining eye contact)
    • under no circumstances should you fight a bear

I know this is mostly a joke post but if a black bear (or any color man) attacks you the best move IS generally to fight back.

This is correct. If a black bear gets aggressive without cubs involved, the animal is likely either ill or has lost its fear of humans (which is bad, mmkay) and has likely decided that they are on the menu.

Yeah and black bears are pussies despite being bears, if you’re lucky you can disable them at the expense of your arm’s noncrushedness

Yeah and black bears are skittish enough and small enough that you have a good chance of scaring it away or hurting it. A brown bear is just too big for you to have any use in fighting back, but luckily brown bears are territorial and most of the time they just want to scare you away or get rid of a rival, so play dead and they’ll usually leave you unscathed enough to live.

I tried, every time they went running towards a bear.

Separate from the pun, seemingly overly aggressive mountain lions that stroll out in the open are usually just mothers scaring you away from their cubs. They’re kind of lying about wanting to attack you.

Mountain lions that do want to attack you usually do so before you even realize they’re there.

Actually they will (sometimes). I had one young black bear that kept approaching me like a shy dog. It kept looking away and pretending to nibble bushes when I shouted at it. I left before finding out if it wanted to eat me (it probably did, being first thing in the spring). Another time we had a black bear that wasn’t too obviously aggressive, but followed one of our crew around for two days. We ended up shooting it because we were in a fly-in camp and couldn’t leave.

Most bears I met walked or ran away, including grizzlies.

      Bears are complicated.

make yourself look as big as possible

This is wrong. A stronger animal (or an adversary) can feel when you are doing this, and they can also feel your fear. From many little things.

It’s much better to be of your true size, so to say, but look up and don’t try to abide by some discipline. That is, being relaxed you look stronger, always.

      If you encounter a bear

      You’re likely dead.
