  • why not just let lose of this crippling desire to align ourselves with some historical identity

Fair enough. Counterpoint: It doesn’t freaking matter what word we use. No matter what the word is, the right will attempt to poison it and stir hatred of it and assign meanings to it that aren’t real. Look at what happened to “woke”. It will keep happening, because the modern right is Fascism, and poisoning language is a fascist tactic that goes back to the very beginning.

Use whatever word you want, just use it consistently. Dont’ expect it to stay free of propaganda, because they do that to our words on purpose.

YSK that most of these have an expiration date (and should have an expiration date). Checking the box says trust this device that I’m currently using, for a while, thus:

    • if you use another device to log in (e.g. switch from mobile to desktop browser), you will need to do it again, because security is tied to your ownership of the device, and
    • if you continue to use the same device for more than–usually–a month, you’ll be asked again because there’s a possibility your device got stolen or compromised in the meantime.

In short, most of the time you’ll have to do this once a month, or more if you’re using more than one device, and that’s nominally to protect you.

However, yes, a significant portion of these are just implemented by dummies, and don’t work.

The particularly annoying ones for me are the ones on bill pay sites. If they work for a month, that doesn’t help me. I only pay my bills once a month.

  • It’s not that it was the issue. It probably wasn’t, although we’ll never know.

It paints a picture. A bigger picture of carelessness, corner cutting, rushing, and absolute indifference to the lives that depend on this company making its sub work.

And in a larger sense, it paints a picture of the way the wealthy run every aspect of the world now: carelessness, corner cutting, rushing, and absolute indifference to human lives.
