  • No idea. I get ecstatic over mediocre contractors who barely gouge. We’ve genuinely just started DIYing almost everything because if it looks “okay, I guess” then at least it didn’t cost $8000 and I semi-learned a new skill.

Edit: our best contractor was from a random Google maps search for handy person. I picked a relatively new business with few reviews entirely because they were the only ones to call back. But they worked out great and I was happy with the work.

I think it is honestly trial and error.

Edit edit: the vibes you get from the in home estimate are helpful. If they don’t try to upsell you at all, hire them.

In fact, the aforementioned best contractor we ever hired told me not to contract them to do something because it was a really simple to DIY. They showed me the exact kit to buy and told me how to do it. Theoretically he could have screwed himself out of money but we decided to do a bigger job than originally planned because of that move.

  • Back in my day we didn’t have no fancy on screen keyboard built into windows! We copy and pasted from a random readme.txt file when our keyboards broke! (Or were taken away by our parents thinking it would make the computer inoperable, haha)

It is a really nice feature now though.

  • Same. My car was keyed this week and I’m 80% certain it was because I stood there next to my vehicle and put on a mask before going into the grocery store. The person in their car next to me was staring intently at me but I didn’t think much of it except to feel embarrassed someone was perceiving me. Came out after like 10 minutes and it was obviously keyed.

I still wear a kn95 mask in public because I help out my 95 year old grandmother who is dying of cancer. She’s still in good spirits and we want her to die in her sleep, not gasping for breath because somebody gave her covid. Not that I should have to justify myself.

But yeah. No. The assumption of “deep down people are mostly good” died with covid.
