I’ve actually heard several times over the last few years that Barcelona is unfriendly towards tourists, and then there’s the recent news that they will ban short-term rentals in 2028 and that multiple groups were involved in the water gun stunt… So no, it’s not just the water guns, but it takes a lot for news from Spain to reach me in the States. The water guns were actually a moderately effective means of telling me that tourism is an issue in the city, and that people are angry about it.

I can’t say that my individual thoughts and actions are common, but I’m not unique in this world either. Many cities are expressing frustration at the results of tourism, and through various means locals are making themselves known. I do think it does some amount of good for the protestors to organize via actions, both for the strength of the local movement, as well as in creating awareness of issues. I’m not sure what else they’re looking for past the ban, though I’m sure they have as many existential crises through capitalism as the rest of the world. Other desires and critiques haven’t made it across the Atlantic to me yet.

Eh, I’d love to visit Barcelona, but I won’t until they figure out how to make tourism work without causing the city to be unlivable for locals.

I wish I knew how to be a better tourist, too. I’ve seen similar feedback from other cities, including my own. Tourism and prioritizing tourism isn’t good for locals in many ways.

I believe Topix was completely anonymous and unmoderated, and it was a train wreck. As a citizen of my town I was embarrassed that it existed. I remember specifically that any time a local principal made any changes at her school vile comments and threats would be posted about her. It was a major concern in her life until the whole site was taken down.

Do you list food on there, too, or mostly inedible consumables like toilet paper? Do you add bulk non-perishable food? Do you have weekly food on there, like produce? This is an awesome idea. My only hesitation is that I’ve always used a paper grocery list.

Uh… Can I ask more about hair? I try to wash my hair once a week, but it currently gets greasy after about 5 days (day 6 and 7 I wear headbands). If I wash it on day 5, do you think I’ll eventually make it to 7 days easily, or do I need to power through?

5 days isn’t going to work. It has to be every other day or every 7 days, as I can’t keep track otherwise! Wash it when it’s greasy doesn’t work for me either 🤷 I’m not intuitive.

I was reacting to the common idea in this thread that Israel doesn’t have any right to exist – which is complicated, as all post-colonial history is. That wasn’t what you were commenting on, though. Israel is definitely encroaching on Palestinian land and rights in Gaza and the West Bank, and are at least half of the force against real peaceful solutions. I fully agree that what’s going on now should be classified a genocide, and as far as I know South Africa is the only country that has stated it.

That’s… Not what happened. Both Israel and Palestine have long historical precedence, and tumultuous ownership claims. They were ultimately created by Britain post-WW2, who then bowed out after a year with very little planning. Don’t add your country’s baggage to an already complex reality. It’s not true, and it’s not going to help you understand what’s going on over there.
