That’s a good point too, it shouldn’t be held to the standard of a legal document yet. I watched the video and definitely did that - forgetting its initiative nature. I think it could be helpful to specify the scope a little more so it doesn’t suffer from scope creep later and get nothing done, as well as bring some focus to the future discussions. But I’m reading some good points in this thread, and I’m curious to see where it goes. Fingers crossed!

Good videos, I enjoyed both of them. The initiative comes from a good place but could use a little more work before being brought to gov’t, if that’s the best place for it.

The first video does address this idea - time stamped for convenience. Basically it’s starting the wrong conversation, without enough nuance to a group of people that may not understand the nuance of the gaming industry. Could end up with more bad than good, as gov’t has done by accident before. I recommend a watch of those two videos, I probably haven’t summed it up very well and out of context clips aren’t necessarily a good representation either. PirateSoftware’s a good speaker imo, easy to listen to.

They’ve said they’re committing to keeping perpetual licensing and are using Canva’s resources to speed up development though. So far, seems okay to me. At least for now. Unless anyone knows otherwise?

To my understanding, you’re technically not pirating as you aren’t the one breaking DRM, ripping the CD, etc. You’re only receiving the pirated content. Kind of similar to how being the passenger in a car doesn’t mean you were driving, but you still end up at the destination (I thought about that simile way less, could be wrong. Don’t think about that one too much lol).

If we go by the broad umbrella most people use the word as, then yea it’d fall under that category. Torrenting, ripping, downloading, etc., all get lumped under pirating most of the time.

Another question might be is that legal since you already own or at least have a license to that content? I dunno. I’ve seen some people say yes, others say still no. Probably depends on the agreement with EA among other things. Or it might actually be out of scope of that agreement. Hm.

But practically speaking? If nobody catches you, nothing will happen ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Frankly this catch phrase never made any sense to me, from a logical point of view.

It assumes that:

1. If buying = owning then pirating* = stealing, because you own it without buying.

2. And if buying =/= owning then pirating =/= stealing, because you can’t own it otherwise.

But the justification in the second statement is completely irrelevant to the first statement. You still own it without buying. It’s still stealing.

UNLESS - we examine what “stealing” is. This is where the arguments about being in a digital space vs. a physical space comes in. Where the question is raised: Is making an exact copy really “stealing”? Or, consider what is being “stolen”? The original item? The idea? We need to think about this more.

But it’s here the argument should be made and here the debate should be. That’s where “pirates” have a chance of winning. Let’s get rid of this flawed, easily repeatable, but fundamentally incorrect catch phrase and come up with a better one already. One that makes sense.

*(Nevermind that most of you technically aren’t even pirating, you’re just downloading the fruits of someone else that pirated.)

So if I wanted to sync photos from my phone to the computer, then delete the local copies on my phone to save space, that would not work?

Oof, memory issues are the worst. I haven’t tried Dolphin myself so I can’t offer much help there, but good luck finding a solution! I should give it a try sometime

Fair point, Mint doesn’t represent Linux as a whole. I finally settled on Mint cause I didn’t like the look of stock GNOME and… I forget why I decided against using Mint’s KDE. Choose Cinnamon cause I was tired after distro hopping a bunch and didn’t want to tinker anymore.

I’m sure you can customize GNOME to look like KDE/Cinnamon, but if it just breaks in the next update or two I’d rather not go through the trouble.

I think I read somewhere that Mint is getting wayland support soon though? It’ll be nice if that fixes the crashing bug.

Very specific - linux mint occasionally… crashes? Goes back to lock screen randomly, and closes all open programs. Very annoying to have happen when playing Beyond All Reason with 15 other people, causing the game to pause while I scramble to get back in (if possible). Haven’t looked into why too much, just went back to Windows to game. Mint for casual browsing and most else.
