I have to occasionally remind myself that some awful people go to church for the same reason sick people go to hospital. They can tell there’s something not right.

1·18 hours agoSo you’ve never run out of space on your HDD, or replaced your machine, or wanted to lend or sell your game? You’re in the minority.

1·2 days agoPublishers have proved time and time and time again that they can’t be trusted to keep that download available to you after you’ve handed the money over.

1·2 days agoDiscworld (1995) came with an actual t-shirt in the box. But there was an insane period in the early 2000s where they’d stopped doing manuals, maps and other extras but still packaged the disc in a box the size of a 450g cornflakes packet.
I’m ok with manuals not being a thing, because it’s a reflection of improvements in both software and game design where you don’t need to read 24 pages of text before you can play a game. But I’m not ok with publishers basically killing the secondary market.
You don’t even have to get high-mindedly preachy, it’s a bad take on its own terms, since it hinges on the notion that the population at large are all “dumb” and therefore deserve bad things.
Capitalism contains the seeds of its own destruction. Enshittification is the inevitable result of shareholders demanding endless growth at all costs.
Also, the record high temperature in Singapore (1 degree north of the equator) is 9 degrees Celsius lower (37C) than France’s record (46C).
What’s rarely communicated clearly enough is that “warming” means “more energy”. If it had been called something like “atmospheric energy buildup” from the start, maybe there’d be fewer people saying dumbshit like “so much for global warming” every snowstorm.
The astonishing part is how they manage to both be overly heavy-handed on moderation and STILL keep floating a fuckton of racism and other bigotry to the top.

2·10 days agoCorbyn was laid low by trumped-up accusations of anti-semitism, it would be ironic if the press did the same to AB for (supposedly) taking the opposite side.

151·11 days agoI’m somewhat suspicious of the way the Guardian didn’t actually publish the interview itself, but just their journalist’s writeup of it. We’re not told what the question he answered actually was, just what it was “about”, and then the headline writers of the outlets quoting that quote take it a step further into implying that he’s a full-on genocide denier.

12·11 days agoI still can’t find Ultra HD discs in the shops either - it’s easier to find low res DVDs in 2026 than 4k discs even though most TVs sold now are 4k.
I have become convinced that Sony are deliberately sabotaging their own format because Sony Pictures ran the numbers and concluded they’d make more money if everyone had to stream.

2·14 days agoRequire an AI SLOP disclosure.
No advertising bot is going to admit to it. The only people for whom failure to jump this hoop will be a blocker, are legit posters.
I don’t run ad block because they’re showing me ads, I run it because creepy fuckers are trying to collect everything I’ve ever done online and store it forever.

World News@lemmy.world•Russian drone hits NATO member state RomaniaEnglish
602·1 month agoA Russian drone hit an apartment building in Romania, a NATO member state, sparking outrage across Europe, where nations have ramped up defense efforts against Moscow. The explosives-packed aircraft was ostensibly bound for nearby Ukraine, but crossed into a Romanian town near the two countries’ border.
Of the five posts I’ve seen so far on social media on this topic, this is the only to give some sense of what actually happened.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•You can no longer Google the word 'disregard'English
18·1 month agoThe important thing that often gets missed in stories like this, is that this apparently tiny harmless thing is actually a big deal, because it’s the canary in the coalmine that alerts you to how shoddy the entire structure is.

You say that as though corporations are fucking everything up for their own amusement, rather than in the service of making sure the “regular American” gets their luxuries for cheap.
