My general advice at this point is, if you haven’t already, to document the setup for your future self. It quickly gets out of hand with the amount of passwords, credentials, certificates, firewall settings, docker containers left and right, configs, workarounds, custom shell scripts, ansible scripts, git repos, backup locations and passwords, etc. Right now everything is fresh in your mind, but 6 months from now you may need to restore from a backup or an OS upgrade goes wrong, and then you’ll appreciate being able to remember the details.

Interesting, do you remember which didn’t work? I recently set up a simple service (navidrome) as rootless podman with an ansible script, but it was… there were some hoops to jump through, mainly with the uid/gid and machinectl to get it to work.
Always nice to see podman used well! Do you have a dedicated user or is it rootful?

Almost 20 years ago, Theo de Raadt (founder of OpenBSD) said: “you think that a worldwide collection of software engineers who can’t write operating systems or applications without security holes, can then turn around and suddenly write virtualization layers without security holes.” I would like to think that we’ve figured out the security holes since then, but… you know…

I knew one once, LFS daily driver I mean, a very special person. She had nerve damage in her leg after having destroyed her phone in the most violent way in anger, and regularly invited friends to cam shows to watch her have sex. She was also a very skilled (computer) pentester.
There are layers to this, Arch people feel superior to Mint or Ubuntu users. But! FreeBSD feels superior to all Linux. OpenBSD superior to all other BSDs, Plan9 superior to all other OSs. Meanwhile, Linus Torvalds uses Fedora and Ken Thompson uses Debian. Iirc Rob Pike uses MacOS.

What’s your favourite distro? As a chronic distrohopper I’m always curious about what people use and why.
9front is the only OS I know that actually has a minimum age recommendation on their web landing page: “Ages: 5 & Up”
It’s really a declaration, or an assertion.

5·4 months agoI agree, honesty is a good first step. So, given all this, should we focus on simply being the more attractive option? Or a combination of principles and convenience? If the good option is cheaper or more convenient, we wouldn’t strictly need principles and moral arguments. I’m just thinking of strategy here, it can feel good to be a righteous preacher, but what actually gets us the results we want?

11·4 months agoI think there is a fatigue. Morally, I can’t justify eating animal products, but I do eat cheese and drink milk. I should take the bus instead of driving, but sometimes I use my car out of convenience. Chocolate means exploiting workers in some country. Etc. People see the world burning and feel powerless.

Valid or not, we have three options: 1) Put up with the current situation. 2) Fix the problem. 3) Pay someone else to fix the problem.
