Give NixOS a shot. It’s got a learning curve that may be difficult if you’ve never read code, but it’s my preferred immutable setup.

It even has more packages than Arch.

You’re not paying to remove ads from Lemmy. You can continue using Lemmy ad-free on mobile via the mobile site or any of the other PWA’s or native apps. What you’re paying to remove ads from is Sync. The developer has decided that they need to be compensated to sustain the amount of effort developing and maintaining the app requires. If you don’t want to pay that price with cash or your eyeballs then don’t use it.

Nobody is forcing you to use Sync, nobody is forcing you to see ads. The beauty of a platform like Lemmy is you have the choice to use whatever client you want. That doesn’t mean you’re entitled to any of them.

Everyone is just by default assuming they want to be part of the fediverse, rather than they saw Lemmy as the most viable piece of software to realize the type of platform/community they’re want to create. They’ve made clear from the start that they want a more heavily moderated and curated community, and that is by definition going to be mean excluding people and instances that go against that.

Came here to say exactly this. I’ve hopped distros for years, Fedora is the longest I’ve stuck to a single distro and it’s been fantastic.

The entire value proposition of the fediverse is that you can defederate rather than being stuck under the same roof as you would on a centralized platform.

The only people I see complaining about this are on the defederated instances, the Beehaw users seem to be generally happy with the change.

The ability to defederate anyone is literally what defines federation. There is no “the fediverse” unilaterally, that’s the entire point.

All of the memes and threads I’ve seen complaining about this are from the instances that are being defederated, rather than from within Beehaw itself. In fact if you go and read the threads where they discuss these changes it seems the majority of the Beehaw users are okay with this.

Thank you for pointing this out. Almost all of the complaints I’ve seen are coming from the instances that were defederated rather than from within the Beehaw community. You can verify this yourself by reading the comments on their discussion threads about the matter. It’s almost like the users of Beehaw agree with the decision otherwise they would have left for another instance.
