Your Skylake laptop from 2015 boots faster than my Zen 4 desktop from 2022 (with a PCIe Gen 4 NVME SSD!)

This thing takes 25 seconds just to POST. The fucked up thing is that it used to be even worse, but has slowly been improving with BIOS updates. The good news is that once it’s up and running, this machine is ready to fuck. Programs open the second I click the icon and loading screens don’t exist in games anymore. But it’s still disappointing that AMD can’t figure out how to make their shit boot faster.

I’ve on more than one occasion saved an old laptop from being replaced simply by slapping a cheap SATA SSD into them. The owners are almost always convinced that they needed a new PC, when all they do with it is browse Facebook and watch TikTok all day.

When I built a new PC last year, I was wondering how I managed to filled up a 4TB NVME in only 6 months… until I downloaded one of those programs that breaks down your hard drive usage.

Games, it’s all games. I don’t even consider myself a gamer. I can’t even begin to imagine the struggle of an actual gamer who is still stuck with a 256GB SATA SSD as their only high speed drive. What do you do when nearly every game that comes out these days is 100GB+ and requires an SSD?

I’ll try the plastic idea; thanks.

Though it still doesn’t solve the issue of her refusing to scratch a designated post. She’ll just find something else. I’ve thought about buying a cheap yoga mat, cutting off a bit and taping it to the floor, cause she seems to enjoy scratching those too when we’re working out and step away for a break.

  • What do you do when the cat refuses to use scratching posts? No matter the material—cardboard, carpet, rope—she will only scratch the furniture and folded towels. (We even tried wrapping a scratching post in towel material and she still won’t scratch it.)

Obviously we don’t want her destroying the furniture, so we don’t* let her scratch long enough to shorten her nails… wat do?

  • I used to think this too until I got a proper NVME (instead of another SATA SSD). Once you get used to programs opening instantly—and no loading screens in games, ever—there’s no going back to spinning disks. Waiting 10-20 seconds for a program to open on a HDD feels like an eternity now.

    Edit: formatting, spelling

  • Dude’s talking out their ass.

And just to clarify, I was taking about the 2023 version of Spider-Man 2 on PS5, not the 2002 version on GameCube. The official PC port is that game doesn’t come out for another year, or you could just play the unofficial port now.

And FWIW hardware limitations weren’t a thing in 2002, either. Graphics cards existed then. So again, dude’s talking out of their ass.

  • Does anyone else remember when Windows 98 would let you change your DVD drive’s region, but only let you do it five times total before you were permanently locked into the region you selected the fifth time?

I was so tempted to change the setting just for fun, but never did because the warning message scared the shit out of 12-year-old me.
