361·5 days agoI took my step daughter to a My Little Pony con (Trot-con) about 10 years ago. I’d never been to a con before other than GenCon way back in the day so I was a little surprised as well as pleased when the people running the con gave a little welcome speech including the announcement that attendees needed to shower regularly and that “Con-Funk” would not be tolerated.
To be honest, I was relatively young in my GenCon days. I hope I wasn’t one of the ones who reeked.
I did a search and found this which I suspect is what they are referring to.
You gain the ability to see into the hidden layers of reality, revealing eldritch traces and secrets. For the duration, you gain advantage on Intelligence (Arcana) and Wisdom (Insight) checks.
Additionally, you can see creatures that are invisible, ethereal, or otherwise hidden within 60 feet of you, though you can’t perceive exact details. Creatures detected in this way appear as faint, shadowy figures in your vision.

231·16 days agoHe told Gizmodo he was surprised when he first got into Bitcoin in 2020 to find what he described as “a rich, vibrant community of Christian Bitcoiners,” and said the success of his self-published book, which he says has sold more than 10,000 copies over the past three years, only reinforced his sense that the overlap was real.
This should come as no surprise. People who are willing and able to have faith in things without any quantifiable evidence are going to be easy to draw into scams.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Safe firearm storage may reduce blood lead levels in childrenEnglish
41·20 days agoThey researchers hypothesize that the children’s blood lead content is related to lead particles carried into the home on a recently fired gun and the parent’s clothing. That sounds weak as hell to me. It’s much more likely that the children and parents are both exposed when the gun is fired. More likely, in my opinion, the whole family was exposed by going to Nascar races, that until recently still used leaded gasoline, or some other environmental exposure. I would imagine that long term lead exposure could readily be associated with unsafe gun storage.

11·20 days agoYeah, my first thought was also that they had the causal relationship backwards.
The NIMBY problems are not just for the storage location either. Nobody want nuclear waste trucked or shipped by rail through their region. Imagine if the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment had been carrying casks of nuclear waste.
This is what we do with spent fissile material
Well, I can’t speak for other countries, but most of the nuclear waste generated in the USA has never reached any sort of permanent storage. Defense waste, from making nuclear weapons, is mostly stored in underground bunkers in two states.
How and where is nuclear waste stored in the U.S.?
Remnants of the chemical processing of radioactive material needed to manufacture nuclear weapons, often called “defense waste,” will eventually be melted along with glass, with the resulting material poured into stainless steel containers. These canisters are 10 feet tall and 2 feet in diameter, weighing approximately 5,000 pounds when filled.
For now, though, most of it is stored in underground steel tanks, primarily at Hanford, Washington, and Savannah River, South Carolina, key sites in U.S. nuclear weapons development. At Savannah River, some of the waste has already been processed with glass, but much of it remains untreated.
Waste from energy generation is almost all still stored above ground on site.
After about five years, the fuel bundles are removed, dried and sealed in welded stainless steel canisters. These canisters are still radioactive and thermally hot, so they are stored outdoors in concrete vaults that sit on concrete pads, also on the power plant’s property. These vaults have vents to ensure air flows past the canisters to continue cooling them.
As of December 2024, there were over 315,000 bundles of spent nuclear fuel rods in the U.S., and over 3,800 dry storage casks in concrete vaults above ground, located at current and former power plants across the country.
Even reactors that have been decommissioned and demolished still have concrete vaults storing radioactive waste, which must be secured and maintained by the power company that owned the nuclear plant.
…
A more permanent solution is likely years, or decades, away.
Not only must a long-term site be geologically suitable to store nuclear waste for thousands of years, but it must also be politically palatable to the American people. In addition, there will be many challenges associated with transporting the waste, in its containers, by road or rail, from reactors across the country to wherever that permanent site ultimately is.
Perhaps there will be a temporary site whose location passes muster with the Supreme Court. But in the meantime, the waste will stay where it is.

Not The Onion@lemmy.world•Satya Nadella ‘Not Sure’ Who Said Microsoft Wanted to Make Addictive AI, Is Looking for Guy Who Did ThisEnglish
15·1 month agoHere
The document we reported on was not some random document. As we wrote at the time, the strategy document was written by Microsoft executives Omar Shahine, Jakob Werner, and some sort of AI writing tool. This information is in our original article and is readily available to Nadella. We wrote: “The document seen by 404 Media lists Shahine and another executive, Jakob Werner, as its authors. The document itself, however, notes that it was ‘co-created turn-by-turn with AI. Human verified every sentence.’”
Shahine is the leader of Microsoft’s Scout project, as he has written numerous times on his own blog, on his LinkedIn, and on Microsoft’s own announcement of the software. In attempting to distance himself from his own company’s executives and strategy documents, Nadella has revealed that he either does not know how to read or does not know what is happening with some of the company’s highest-profile products.
Reminds me of a line from Douglas Adams’ Life, the Universe, and Everything.
He dropped into a kind of alert crouch that he had once seen somebody do on television, but it must have been someone with stronger knees.

54·2 months agoThat sounds very nice. I’m honestly jealous. However, there were 408 mass shootings in the USA last year. That’s more than 110 people shot per day. While I in no way support the policies of the police in the USA, I do have to admit that given the likelihood that the residents of any particular home might be armed, I personally would not want to be a lightly armed and unarmored cop knocking on a door here. I mean, people here have literally been shot just for knocking or ringing a doorbell.
While all cops are indeed bastards, many of the other people in this country aren’t any better. The left end of the bell curve in this country is very heavily armed and doing their part to help police turn the nation into the war zone they think it already is. Until common sense gun laws are passed and the dumbest and most violent among us are disarmed, it’s not going to change for the better.
Six freaking hours and nobody stepped up?! Fine, I’ll do it.
Yes, it might be awful, but stop calling them Shirley.
This is the Andes strain which can pass from person to person.
Palacios said the window for transmission of the Andes virus appears to be short, about a day. People are at their peak of infectiousness on the day they develop a fever.
But the study also found that the virus could be passed relatively easily during this window, after periods of only brief proximity to someone else.

2·2 months agoI hope these folks aren’t leaving any wires within reach of the cattle. They also tend to chew on things. They see some wires and they will grab them to see if they are food, particularly calves. Even if they don’t bite through the wires, they will damage insulation and they also like to tug on the wires hard enough to disconnect them.
I have cameras and an electric gate opener that have both been chomped when any wires were left accessible to the cattle.

12·2 months agoI think the secret clues are in what he’s not saying. First, he never said it was a prescribed medicine. My bet, since we already know he was day drinking, is that it was a recreational substance.
Second, he never actually says he got vomit on his pants. He just says that the mix “eventually” made him vomit. It’s likely that he was so messed up from his booze and pharmaceutical cocktail that he shit himself and he’s leaving that part out.
That or he just ditched his pants to rub one out, which is where I’d put my money.
Oh, good point. I didn’t think to mention that. Thanks!
