To be fair, Spotify’s recommendation system is the only algorithmic content feed that I feel actually gets me the kind of stuff I want rather than just exploiting my psyche, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Spotify’s AI integration is likewise the only of it’s kind that has real benefit.

If your pull request doesn’t get merged in, you still learned just as much as if it did, so the time you spent doing it wasn’t wasted. In fact, people may make comments on it explaining why it won’t be merged in, so you’ll learn more than if it was.

You don’t need to be an expert to start contributing—in fact, the best way to improve is to try to contribute, fail, and then learn how to improve next time you tackle and issue :)

I second this. Just going through vimtutor a couple times and then learning how to use the :help pages effectively is all you need to make vim usable.

I’d recommend using neovim over plain vim though, if not for any reason other than it has nicer defaults.

Honestly, one of the best things you could do is use Linux Mint instead of Ubuntu. It’s a lot more new user friendly.

OP, do not use Arch as a beginner unless you’re already a very techy person.

You don’t have to learn vi if you don’t want to. Just switch your default text editor to one that you like (it doesn’t even have to be a GUI one)

Lemmy is still fairly new to most people here and most of these new people came from reddit. A group of people who majorly are having a single, shared, novel experience (moving from reddit to Lemmy) are gonna talk about that thing until it stops being novel.

It’s already getting considerably less meta so I’d just enjoy it for what it is, contribute content to the communities you like, and just allow the meta conversations to naturally subside.

Additionally, all attempts at democracy, and all instances of capitalism, have resulted in tyranny, because it’s just really hard to build a society that doesn’t do that no matter what governmental system and economic system you set out to establish.

Even places like New Zealand or the Nordic countries which are much closer to a social democracy are tyrannical insofar as they participate, propagate, and benefit from a global network of capitalism that is only possible through the exploitation of hundreds millions, if not billions of people. Outsourcing your tyranny and exploitation to other places on the planet is still tyranny.and exploitation: it just has better PR.

Same. I was thinking the exact same thing at that point. A massive part of the movie’s message hinges on that line and I smiled so wide when I heard it because it clicked much of the rest of the film into place.

“Stereotypical Barbie” (the Margot Robbie one) actually seems to get it by the end. In fact, her main character arc was going from being like the other barbies—watered down stereotypes of feminism—to actually a feminist who has a better grasp of why just equalizing out positions of power, while still good, does not address the root of patriarchy.
