Surprisingly (/s) the bill mandating these reports doesn’t have any steps for remedying falsification of these records so it seems these acts of subterfuge could fall under 720 ILCS 5/32-8, which classifies them as Class 3 or 4 felonies and would make any person found guilty ineligible to work in government thereafter (in addition to any jail time). Not just that, imagine an additional billion and change circulating in local economies instead of that amount being siphoned out annually. It’s insane that they passed a law preventing this from happening for twenty years and we’re seeing this benefit because it expired

I don’t go in for this framing - it employs language that diminishes substantive policy differences and discourages engagement and turnout from people that share similar moral compass bearings, which only empowers those who thrive in low turnout elections and high apathy in the periods between them. It would be far better, from my view, for folks of all progressive stripes to be encouraging everyone to vote for progress at every level of every ballot, and highlighting local candidates that will help to push the top of the ticket and national dialogue towards even more progressive ideals. Positioning all options as evil has big “the bus boycotts won’t get results and should stop” energy

Some of my closest friends are people I began interacting with online - some I’ve made trips to visit, others are so far away that we might never meet afk. I began chafing at the online/irl dichotomy more than thirty years ago when my uncle showed me Ohio State’s intranet and my parents lamented that I needed to be spending my time in “the real world”. Back then, I was floored that I could have real interactions with real people in real places I’d never been, and these days I am no less amazed by the ability to connect on a real level with people in digital spaces.

To this day, online and afk are the distinctions I use for my real life interactions - my words are just as able to bring comfort and solace or mockery and derision in either space, and I comport myself the same way in both because of thoughts like the ones in this post.

It’s a little extra operational overhead, but they should proceed with the program everywhere but the areas that are subject to those specific appeals courts. Whenever a borrower from one of those states applies, just send back a form letter naming the judges who’ve blocked their access to relief from the predatory practices of lenders, and spell it out for them. Name the governors and other state officials who signed on to the challenge, then use the form letter to foment action against them.

Ehh, they serve customers in the suburbs and city dwellers hoping to recapture a sense of not-being-in-the-city too. Us rural folks have dozens of places to go and pick up hay and shave and feed instead, so just like every other time some corp has done the right thing and then backtracked, they’ve lost the group that got all hurt about being included in a bigger tent, they’ve lost the group that was newly included, and they’re left holding a presumably smaller portion of the market than before they failed to hold to their convictions. Make stupid moves, win stupid prizes.

We get asked by one of our nearby tractor supplies to participate in their market days during the summer, along with several other small businesses around us. I can think of several, besides us, that will tell them to pound sand and won’t lend our credibility to their outreach programs - especially if that outreach is only for the benefit of some of our neighbors.
