This isn’t trying to learn a language. This is memorizing a few key words to convey the most basic of necessities. I have lived in english speaking tourist places, and anytime it got popular, with a more culturally insular ethnicity (ie like people from the booming Chinese middle class who aren’t working in a place that places value on knowing english), it’s not that big of a deal. This happened A LOT with the economic miracle period, new middle class, of germany, and japan. Their inability to speak english isn’t what bothered me, or anyone else where we were, it was their crass disrespect of property, propensity to wander off, alone, into the wilderness, etc. that made them bad tourists. Their home media trying to blame us for some idiot, that wandered off into death valley, with only a small bottle of water, didn’t help. I can’t expect someone raised in those conditions to know my language at all, and I wouldn’t want them excluded, nor feel they should receive rude treatment, for not know how to say bathroom, or whatever.

However, if I spoke, say, simplified chinese, I would not continue speaking english to a chinese person I know I can’t speak english, to have a clear communication venue, in their language. As long as they are not acting in a manner detrimental to where I live, they are fine. Who am I to expect everyone to know my language? Why would I exclude those people to greater exposure to my culture if that bothered me? That would be oppositional to my desire for them to better understand my language. Just sounds like misplaced frustrations that come with living in any tourist spot. Depending on exactly what you feel/do, maybe xenophobia.

If I had to learn the language of every country I ever visited I would have never had time to visit those countries.

A lot of this is because people had to do a lot more exercise during the day than we do now. Not that the lard was better for us. This is where a lot of the downvotes come from. Even the rich had to do a lot more walking. If we could return to the amount of exercise we averaged 50+ years ago, you would see a lot of this decline. The next big thing is the amount we eat. We consume significantly more calories now than we used to. In the past 100 years it has increased ~20%. All the while we have been doing less physically. The third big factor is where the shitty food comes in. Having sugar/highly refined carbs added to just about everything promotes over-eating, while also fucking with your insulin production, and other endocrine issues, that promote fat retention, while also increasing addictive eating disorder likelihood.

Ha, something similar happened to my grandmother, though they claimed to need to read her meters. My grandmother is in her 90s and has a lead a hard as fuck life, she takes zero shit. So she immediately thought it was odd that they didn’t say which utility meter they needed to look at, nor did their uniforms have anything more than vague identifiers on it. So she said oh? which meter? What utility? She said they stammered a bit but said water, and she said, ok, the water meter is right there, pointing to the meter in the back of her car-port. Then they tried to come up with some BS about how they need to get the “other” meter readings at her water-heater. She knows that isn’t a thing. So she said there isn’t such a thing, you need to leave. They immediately started to argue and she said “I have no qualms shooting two men trying to rob me”. They left, they were yelling they would tell the police, their utilities company, the department of public works, etc. She said she needed to take her heart medication right afterword, but was otherwise fine.
