While I agree that there should be a secular, non-ethno-, state of The Levantine Union or something, there is no realistic path to that that doesn’t start from a two-state basis I don’t think. Palestine and Israel first need to comingle culturally and intertwine economically (in a mutually beneficial manner–not just Israel exploiting Palestinians for cheap hard labor) before any unification can really happen imo.
The question is who will turn out to vote. The number of “independents” who don’t overwhelmingly vote republican or democratic is vanishingly small. This is found time and time again. Ultimately it’s a question of which electorate turns out and which is demotivated enough not to.

I feel like this paints Hamas in a much more forgiving light that it deserves. Hamas “won” the election after a violent campaign of intimidation and even then only by a plurality. While Fatah has many flaws, it’s not a religio-fascist organization prone to arbitrary violent cruelty. Yes, Fatah criticizing Hamas is nothing new, but more because they’re fundamentally opposed groups than Western preferences.
EDIT: It’s been pointed out to me that I was wrong about the context of Hamas’ election and sources seem to back this up. While Hamas IS a violent religio-fascist organization, its violence against its electorate and opposition parties did not escalate until a few years after they were elected to a clear majority.

Unfortunately, I don’t think you’ll find that as much anymore. One of understated but equally awful side effects of Hamas’ very successful pogrom is, in targeting who it did among the Israeli population, it pushed a lot of Israeli society currently in Israel hard right even beyond standard rally around the flag effects. The Israeli left and peace activist movement effectively died last year.

This slightly misses the mark. The majority of crimes, including violent ones, are not committed by people performing a risk calculus. They’re done with minimal thought and more often than not in the heat of the moment. Effectively, they are not crimes that you can deter because for a crime to be deterred, the potential criminal has to assess whether it makes sense to commit the crime. This works in cases of like financial fraud and white collar crime. Someone shooting another person during an altercation, not so much.
What Hamas did had a totally unsurprising result, as distressing as that is, that inevitably resulted in, and continues to result in, unacceptable civilian suffering. Moreover, even though Israel has slow walked towards a regressive ethnofascist state since at least the Rabin’s assassination, the October attack straight up merced whatever dwindling progressive peace activist movements on the Israeli side that were still continuing the struggle.
One can be anti-Zionist and pro-basic human decency without romanticizing a violent religious fundamentalist organization that has at this point done almost nothing but harm to the interests and well-being of the people whom it purports to be protecting.
