Our instance is federated with hexbear, lemmygrad etc. I want to be resonsible for what I see and block, I’m really not a fan of defederation unless it’s a last resort (i.e. CSAM or other illegal content).

Yes, that’s pretty much our take on it: we’ll defederate CSAM (and nonce-adjacent) instances asap, those with lax registration tend to become havens for spammers and trolls, so there is usually a wave of defederating, then someone reaches out to them, it gets sorted and we allow them back in. That tends to be the regular defederation and isn’t controversial. Defederating, for example, Hexbear over, for example, trolling would be a bigger deal and we’d try and speak to the other Admins about it before any permanent banning.

But I can’t help but feel like there’s another story here regarding the potential risks of the fediverse:

It’s perhaps the most important story going forward. Rexxit was only a year ago and a lot of instances are gone already. If that’s not sorted out people will start to wonder why they should invest time and effort in an instance or community.

Admins need to be ready to migrate ownership to others who are willing to take on the financial or user account management burden.

It was touch-and-go for us on feddit.uk but it all worked out right at the last minute and we’ve been working hard to ensure that everything is set up so that the instance’s future is assured for as long as the users want it. Here is our most recent financial report.

A lot of problems could be avoided by planning ahead - never rely on a single Admin and make sure that funding is in place (and not being run from any one individual’s bank account - why Open Collective is very good for this). That way, if one Admin has to step down (and you are less likely to burn out if you can spread the load) then there are already others who can pick up the slack.

The Fediverse is a big beast with a lot of local instances that have nothing to do with US politics (I may be biased as I do help run one - see, eg, !uk_politics@feddit.uk) and the majority of topic specific communities are less US-focused. Hell, you even have !noyank@lemmy.ml. So you can change things around by expanding and/or pruning your yiur subs.

But I feel like $30 000 should at least make them consider copy/pasting content to Mastodon.

If I am reading it right, it’s now at $120k and shooting for $125k. That’s enough to get on their radar.

It has a huge number of plugins - this is a list of the productivity ones. You’d need to do some reading to see if it has what you require.

As far as I can tell, you can do.

Obsidian has a huge number of plug-ins, that cover a wide range of uses. I also use Zettel Notes as a quick md file editor and that has the ability to capture pages in markdown to read later. And/or you can use Omnivore.

Counter-proposal: Perhaps use Obsidian instead?

The login page specifically mentions signing in using Mastodon (although In assume the other named services also work) and returns a 404 if you try to use a Lemmy instance:

So I signed up with my Mastodon account and that went smoothly.

The data page does show that the importing is only from the named sources.

Conclusion:

It’s a very nice looking service and should prove very useful.

For our purposes here it would need Lemmy integration but that’s not insurmountable, it’s written in Python so there should be plenty of people who could get stuck in an add it.

I’d, personally, want to import my IMDb lists but that’s not difficult to fix as other movie sites allow this (I know Trakt do, and the clunky fix is to go via Letterboxd who also appear to do it but I haven’t tried there).

So a few issues I’d like to see addressed but neither look too difficult and, as this has only just popped up on our radar, I am sure there are people thinking along the same lines (and many others, as this has huge potential).

For starters, you should be able to log in with a Lemmy account. I’ll be combing the documentation to see what else can be done.
