“Boomer shooter” is the latest term to follow the likes of “Roguelike” or “Soulslike” in the realm of hyperspecific gaming subgenres. It applies to first-person shooters that intentionally harken back to the classic PC games of the late ‘90s like Doom and Quake.
Thanks for that. TIL I liked “Boomer shooters”.
Glad to be of service. I picked this article as it relates to a couple others I did. One is on todays release of Trepang^2. It’s crossposted in the community if you are interested.

As a decidely non-boomer who grew up playing those original FPSs, I find it aggravating too, but it’s a pretty established term at this point.
That is because they ARE annoying, pointlessly insulting, and do not actually track with the age group it is referencing.
Terms are not magically legitimized just because they sort of rhyme. It is stupid.
A more accurate term would be X Shooter, or even Shooter eXtreme (since that’s totally how stuff was advertised to my generation). A boomer wouldn’t even be able to play the game.

Did this even come from Twitch? People outside of Twitch use the word “boomer”.
No idea, I am not part of any of that. Seems like that has always been a good decision.
Note the date of the article: October 2021.
I didn’t realize that made it irrelevant. Especially when I’m using it to lead in to three other articles that are all based on that article, and one of the games that falls in the class of this article has been released today.
More that the article being a few years old means it’s missed out on a number of notable releases in the interim.
The good news for you is I posted two articles since then. https://lemmy.ninja/post/14972 https://lemmy.ninja/post/18150
Now you’re up to date.
Maybe we should pull a Hacker News and start a culture of putting the year of articles in the title
Sure wish id would capitalize and develop a true, in house successor to Quake. I actually like Quake Champions, but you can’t help wonder what it would be like to have id or Epic put the full force of their development talent behind an arena shooter for the modern era.
I’m sure I’m the only person here that played Quake Enemy Territory. Absolutely loved it. Quake 4 was fun too. It would be nice if they did a Quake… update? Reboot?
No, I remember it. It took the RTCW:ET multiplayer and added a Quake 2 - Strogg and expanded it out into a full standalone game. The problem was when it came out and the - at-the-time death of PC gaming for Xbox360 and PS3. A free to play remaster would probably be popular.
Old article but still true. Love boomer shooters :)
I’m looking for shooters to catch up more to the 6th gen style. I miss 007: Agent Under Fire with moon gravity and Q Claw. I miss Halo. I miss Metal Arms. I miss split-screen and LAN multiplayer.
Take a look at: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1574480/Agent_64_Spies_Never_Die/ For Multiplayer see if https://store.steampowered.com/app/629540/Alien_Arena_Warriors_Of_Mars/ suits your fancy.
If you liked Quake, Wraith: Aeon of Ruin is built on the Quake engine.
If anyone in the comments doesn’t know about Civvie11 on Youtube, he’s the best source of long-form boomer shooter reviews and well-edited playthroughs on the platform. MtPain11 (a.k.a. Dean of Doom) is also amazing for Doom WADs specifically, that whole community got revitalised with the release of DOOM 2016 and just keeps going from strength to strength.
I’ve like Doom Eternal and Ultrakill. It’s perfect for my sometimes short attention span with so much happening at once that it doesn’t give my mind a chance to start drifting off.
I was gifted a very unique game in this style, called “Forgive Me Father”. I believe it was created by a single person and is extremely well designed and scary. If you haven’t checked that out, I would highly suggest it.
It was one of my first posts. I am excited about about Forgive me Father II. The story and the art are well done (putting it mildly). I’m trying to get an interview with the dev so I can write an article on the second one and stream it on release.
