Stella Gibson (played by Gillian Anderson in the tv show The Fall) :
A woman, I forget who, once asked a male friend why men felt threatened by women. He replied that they were afraid that women might laugh at them. When she asked a group of women why women felt threatened by men, they said, “We’re afraid they might kill us.”
Aren’t memes supposed to at least make an attempt at humor?
Not necessarily:
I’m on Lemmy, not Wikipedia.
But a meme is literally that. Just that humor is what makes ideas spread quickly and intuitively.
I’m not a fucking dictionary; I’m a human that wants to laugh.
Then… scroll?
Omg would you please fuck off
Well, not really. This is kinda like saying “Aren’t video games supposed to be fun?”
Some video games, by the purpose of their design, are not fun. For example, Drakengard (the original one) is a video game that Yoko Taro created because he lamented that so many video games of the time would make violence and killing the thing that generates fun for the player. So the gameplay of violence being very not fun, while possibly a mistake, is thematically appropriate to what he wanted to convey.
Memes likewise don’t have to be funny, because they can also be simply relatable. Sometimes they can convey a feeling or idea that is neither funny or relatable, but one where you say ,“understandable.” Additionally, memes can be used to portray ironic content, summarize videos or represent memorable moments from a particular culture.
Now whether a “not funny meme” is appropriate on Lemmy is entirely up to the particular community rules.
I completely agree. Video games should try to be fun, and memes should try to be funny.
Papers Please?
There is a place for unfunny memes, it’s called Lemmy Shitpost.
