My phone’s at like 120/128 GB, I have 70 to 80 GB in apps, 90% of which I haven’t openened in the last year. But you better believe I’m not deleting those apps, cuz a) I still have pleeeenty of space and b) what if I need them some day.

it’s crazy how hard it is for me to use phone storage compared to computer storage. i used up 98% of 2 tb on my gaming laptop in like a few months, but i’ve had this phone for years have have 40,000 photos and videos and i only just recently reached 95% out of 256 gb (almost 190 gb of that being from images/videos, i have one singular video file filmed on the phone’s camera that is 8 gb)

I highly recommend transcoding all your videos with ffmpeg, for me that reduces their size to anything from 10% - 25% of the original (100MB -> 20MB). I always use this command:

        ffmpeg input.mp4 -vcodec libx265 -crf 28 ouput.mp4

(This will strip metadata, I was too lazy to figure out how to make it keep metadata). What I also do for most videos is turn them all into 1080p30 if they aren’t already.

You can ask ChatGPT to make you a small script to apply that command to all files in a folder, I can’t remember how to do it off the top of my head.

Edit: for linux run this in the folder with your videos:

        for file in *.mp4; do ffmpeg -i "$file" -vcodec libx265 -crf 28 "${file%.*}_transcoded.mp4"; done

My dang /windows directory is like 160 GB and as far as I can tell there’s nothing abnormal going on! It’s infuriating. It’s just growing slowly.

As someone who admins Windows systems for a living as part of my job, two options come to mind: Windows update files, or sync’d content from a file share.

Network file shares that are mapped to a drive letter, and set to be “always available” or “available offline” end up in a hidden subfolder of the windows directory.

Windows updates are stored there too.

There’s also a small matter regarding log files. My best recommendation is to use something like windirstat or wiztree running as an administrator (so it can “see” all the files), which should tell you what directory or subfolder or file is taking up all that space.

      Good luck

winsxs folder can grow to 50 GB too. But there’s lots of versions of libraries, hard linked to where the original file should be, with no way to clean that up. Caused by lots of installations and updates over time. Only solution is reinstalling the system.

Imho, scoop can save you some of that trouble, since it only copies files and adds registry entries, instead of using Windows setup interfaces. It makes updates easier too.

Yeah, -18 points. People sucking up to me soooooo bad. You have one hell of a victim complex.

Also, you have not even been here for a single day. You don’t know the rules. Let me educate you. This isn’t against them. Not against Lemmy.worlds and not against /c/Memes. How do I know? Well, an admin was watching that Twitch stream. Your comment was brought up. We laughed about it. No, it’s not against the rules. As for /c/Memes, I am a former mod of this community and no. Still not against the rules.

Like I said. Cope. Just downvote and move on like an adult instead of throwing a temper tantrum over rules you do not understand.

It was upvoted when i made the comment . This is my new acc i have been here longer than that. Let me guess was those .world admins who are notorious for being unproffessional idk what i expected from them and clearly following their own rules is too much .

Yeah. Two upvotes. Like I said, victim complex.

The admins are the ones who made the rules. They’re the ones who enforce the rules. Not you. It’s almost like they know them better than some random person with an 18 hour account.

But after taking a look at your account, ima just go ahead and block you. Nothing but non stop whining and temper tantrums. While it is kinda funny to laugh at you, you’re equally as boring. Bye

I’m not taking a side here, but I wanted to express my concern for you my friend.

You’re so very passionate about this. That’s obvious by your statements. I just want to make sure you’re okay. This is the internet. It may be against the rules, but nothing to raise your blood pressure about. If you don’t want to see that users content, there’s always the option to block them.

It’s not worth your health, either mental or physical. Be well.

    In my phone, never.
In my tablet, this has happened more than once. And it still hurts, you never get used to it. Because it’s not just the apps, but the screenshots and memes in my messages, too.

It’s a trap and not worth it. I’m currently 72TB deep and the rabbit hole does not stop. You buy one drive and the next thing you know you’re trying to convince your wife to keep a server rack in the living room. One 4TB drive is a slippery slope my friend. Send help.
