    Reddit was the same way, just now the operators are community members instead of corporations. Am I missing something? I don’t get the fear of this if it was okay when reddit did it.

      I could be mistaken, but I think the concern is that a side-effect of federation is that anything posted can be synced up with any number of other servers, and even if you’re running your very own lemmy (or anything using ActivityPub and federated, tbh) server, and you nuke the entire server, your posts can still be out there on other servers.

      I personally don’t have an issue with this; it’s wise to follow the truthism that anything that happens on the internet is on the internet forever. I am also kind of curious as to how this is only going to play out with EU privacy laws.
